Dental Implants FAQ's

What are dental implants?

Dental Implant is an artificial substitute for natural tooth root that is placed into the jaw bone to hold a replacement tooth or crown.

A natural tooth has a root portion that is embedded in the bone and a crown portion that is visible in the oral cavity.

A dental implant is the prototype of the natural tooth root. An abutment is the connector, placed on top of the dental implant to connect the implant with the artificial tooth or crown. Crown is the replacement tooth, customized to match your natural teeth.

Dental Implants in hyderabad can be used to replace an individual tooth or for an implant supported bridge or denture containing multiple teeth. The number and position of implants to support multiple missing teeth in a row is not necessarily equal to the number of missing teeth. In fact the number and position of implants are strategically planned to distribute the biting forces and bridge the gap.

Dental implants are also used to stabilize the removable complete dentures.

Who are the right candidates for dental implants

Dental Implant patients are of all ages and implants may be the right choice of replacement for anyone missing one or multiple or all of their natural teeth due to decay, disease, injury, defects. Ageing is not a limitation for dental implant treatment, in fact they are the ones most benefitted with dental implants in hyderabad. They can also be an option for adolescents after puberty when the jaw stops growing, typically around 16 for girls and 18 for boys.

How do dental implants work?

Teeth restored with dental implant look, feel, and function same as natural teeth. You brush, floss and visit your dentist for regular check- ups and cleanings just like you care for your natural teeth.

The dental implant treatment involves several steps :

  • First the dental implant which is usually cylindrical/tapered post is placed in the jaw bone surgically
  • As the healing progresses the implant will fuse with your natural jaw bone to form a strong, long lasting foundation for the replacement teeth. This healing can take weeks to months while you proceed with your everyday life in between appointments.
  • Once the implant bonds with the jaw bone, a small connector called abutment is placed on top of the implant to connect the implant with the replacement tooth.
  • A single crown or bridge or dentures containing multiple teeth are then attached to the abutment.

What are the benefits of dental implants over other methods of replacing missing teeth ?

Dental Implant restores a missing tooth so that it looks feels and functions like a natural tooth. Other options may cause bone deterioration and may interfere with eating, speaking, smiling and other activities of everyday life.

Traditional tooth supported dental bridges only last five to seven years, and with proper care often more than 10 years, but at some point they may need to be replaced. On the other hand a well placed dental implant when properly cared may last over lifetime. It may need periodic adjustments and maintenance.

A face without teeth can sag, appear sunken and sad. Dental implants allow you to maintain natural smile and shape of your face.

Loosing teeth may lead to deterioration of healthy supporting jaw bone. When the jaw bone is not used to support a natural tooth it undergoes slow continues resorption, losing its volume, strength and firmness. Dental implants are the only dental restoration option that not only preserves natural bone but also stimulates bone formation hence prevent bone loss and maintains health.

Placing a tooth supported bridge requires grinding away the teeth on either side of the missing space. The modified healthy teeth are used as retainers to support the bridge. Dental implants are embedded in the jaw bone, in the spot where your missing tooth root was, without impacting adjacent healthy natural teeth. They also prevent healthy adjacent teeth from shifting as they would if an empty space were left for an extended period of time.

Adjusting to removable dentures can mean struggling to pronounce everyday words. Not so with dental implant that occupies same position as the missing natural teeth with similar size and morphology.

Taste and enjoy the foods you love without hesitation. You can bite normally, eat virtually anything you like and unlike removable dentures there is no fear of denture getting loose. You can experience full taste of the food you eat with dental implant dentures as it doesn’t have additional palatal coverage for support unlike removable dentures.

Dental implant allows you to keep your teeth where they belong- in your mouth. No more worrying that your dentures might slip or fall out. Brush floss and care for them like natural teeth. Dental implants in are fixed in place and bond naturally with your jawbone. That implies, your replacement teeth won’t move, click or shift.

Dental Implant treatment is the most predictable treatment modality for restoration with long tern successful outcomes. It is more predictable than other treatments to repair or replace missing teeth, including bridgework, removable appliances and retreatment of failing root canal therapy.

Are Dental Implants economical ?

A dental implant restored tooth is the next best thing to healthy, natural teeth. It usually lasts longer but costs no more that other treatment modalities of replacing a missing tooth.

For example, dental implants are usually less expensive than a bridge over the long term because a bridge over natural teeth typically has to be replaced time to time. Traditional bridges and dentures also falls short in front of implants in overall patient satisfaction.

No two patients or their customized dental implant treatments are exactly alike, so the number of appointments, procedures and cost varies accordingly. After an initial assessment your implant dentist should provide you with a treatment plan including the estimated number of appointments and cost. They then notify you if there are any changes during the process.

Some patients get accustomed to the state of missing a few teeth and could efficiently chew with their remaining teeth. They do not want to go through the process of replacement because they feel they can manage without them. Although it is importantS to know that missing any tooth from our oral cavity has a sequence of events like migration or tilting of the adjacent teeth into the gap created by the missing teeth, subsequent gaps develop between the other remaining teeth. Migration of the opposing teeth into the space, disturbing the normal bite, hampering health of the remaining teeth due to bone loss, excessive stresses on the remaining teeth causing there breakdown. In order to avoid such consequences it is important to replace the missing teeth as soon as possible because the more we delay the more complex it gets to restore.

The best way to start is to consult with your dentist or a prosthodontist. A prosthodontist is a dental specialist concerned with the diagnosis, restoration of the natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth and associated structures with artificial substitutes in order to restore and maintain normal oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patient. Our Prosthodontist will evaluate your clinical condition and suggest the most optimal treatment for your condition.

The cost of dentures is not fixed. It depends on several factors including the the time required to achieve the treatment outcome, complexity of the treatment involved and location of the dental clinic/hospital.It also depends on the choices and needs of the patient. The best way to determine fees for the services you require is to consult with your prosthodontist and discuss the care you may need to make the right choice.

Denture making involves 4-5 clinical steps which are painless and non invasive. The dentist makes an impression, records the bite, does a try in and finally fits the denture. Fitting of the denture is followed by a regular follow up recalls to check and rectify any difficulty faced by the patient.

When you’re first fitted with new dentures, it’s normal to experience minor irritation, the 24 hour post insertion follow up is mandatory where the dentist adjusts the pressure points if any followed by 1 week, 2 weeks and subsequent follow up if required. The timeline to get accustomed to new dentures varies from patient to patient. Those who wore dentures previously and now have a new set it may take longer to accustom. Similarly, if you have got some natural teeth extracted at the time of the new dentures, the areas where the extractions were performed may be painful or uncomfortable. Pain can be best taken care of by your prosthodontist, hence following their instructions is mandatory.

Yes, it is possible to replace the teeth on the same day of teeth removal with an immediate denture. The gums and supporting bone tend to shrink away with healing and the immediate denture may not fit accurately later. The immediate denture might need to be replaced with a new denture or relined after the healing process gets completed.

Permanent dentures are misleading. As we know most of the things in life are not permanent be it our teeth or dentures. ‘Permanent denture’ is a term used for fixed crown or bridges or implant retained dentures that cannot be removed by the patient but only by the dentist. Changes in the oral cavity is inevitable, even these “permanent dentures” may wear or break or become stained and discolored and will require replacement. A regular dental follow up is mandatory for the maintenance of the dentures. Your prosthodontist is the best judge to suggest if the denture need to be replaced or refitted.

Brushing: Brush your denture with a denture brush or soft toothbrush and mild detergent (e.g. liquid hand washes). Like we do for our natural teeth Brush every surface, inside and out, scrubbing gently.Never brush your dentures with normal toothpaste. Toothpastes consist of abrasives which may harm the dentures. The material used to fabricate the dentures is strong but not so much as the natural enamel of teeth and so toothpaste can be abrasive enough to leave scratches. After rinsing them thoroughly, soak your dentures in plain water overnight. You may soak your dentures in denture cleansing solutions recommended by your dentist to remove most stains. More stubborn stains may require removal by your prosthodontist. While brushing your dentures, brush in a bowl of water or on a small towel in the wash basin. Dentures are delicate and may break if dropped.

Repairing broken dentures: See your dentist if your dentures break, chip, crack or become loose. To avoid damage beyond repair, never attempt to repair a broken denture at home or self adjust them. Your denture may be too old to snugly fit your gums and hence may require a new denture to be fabricated.

Follow Up: Even after getting accustomed to the denture it is mandatory for an annual checkup with your dentist.

  • A new denture may feel uncomfortable for the first few weeks. You may have a bulky or a loose feeling while the muscles of your cheeks and tongue learn to hold the denture in place. You may feel that the tongue doesn’t have enough room. You may experience excessive saliva flow which reduces over a week. Minor irritation or soreness on your gums may require few adjustments by your dentist.
  • Wearing and removal of the dentures by the patient is demonstrated during the insertion visit by the dentist. To dislodge your upper denture place your thumb against the front teeth from behind and press upward and outward towards your nose. When lower denture needs to be removed, use a rocking motion and slowly pull on the denture.
  • Eating with dentures requires practice; begin by eating soft foods for the first week. Cut food and place on the back teeth- up and down motion ( new chewing pattern to be acquired)
  • Speaking with dentures gets easy with practice, try reading your newspaper loud.
  • As you age your mouth naturally changes causing your denture to loosen. Making chewing difficult and irritating your gums. Consult your dentist in that case.
  • Cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing to prevent your denture from dislodging.
